" A Winter Dance" is an oil on canvas using brush & palette knife. It looked to me as though the oak trees on the edge of the mountain trail were dancing in celebration of winter while dressed in the remnants of autumn leaves. Behind them a steep mountain slope offered a snowy backdrop.

"When I was your age, I had to walk 10 miles to school in the snow!" Any parents or grandparents ever say that to you? Well, this is probably what the schoolhouse looked like! What an incredible moment! A fresh snow that still leaves some remnants of Autumn. I painted this using pallet knife and brush. For those who are not familiar with horse terms, a tack shed is where one stores horse's equipment such as saddles,bridles, etc.

It is common to have an early snowfall in the mountains of New Mexico. This one stayed around for 5 days. Here it is early morning before there are footprints of man or beast. Fresh snow has the quality of soft shadows which create wonderful shadows. In painting it, I get a thrill from laying down the pure whites, as though I'm playing with snow.

What is the difference between a note card and a greeting card?

Usually a note card is approximately 3 x 5 inches , and has some sort of image on the front of it. A greeting card, on the other hand is larger...at least 5 x 7 inches usually, and often has a message inside. What's interesting is that they each conjure up a different idea. A note card means a personal message on an attractive small card, and a greeting card means it's your birthday, or Christmas, or graduation etc..

So, for the Holiday Season I'm calling my cards "greeting cards"!

I Painted most of this during an incredible snow storm up here the mountains of the Cibola National Forest ( New Mexico) where it's 8500 ft above sea level. The work was done inside a camper that I converted into an art studio.....I was really "in" the storm! I was dressed for the outdoors while doing it, as the old camper did not provide adequate heat. I like to think that the sense of the experience is communicated in the painting.

The trees at the edge of the forest seemed to be marching in the snow. While living here in the mountains of the Cibola National Forest, one begins to see things differently...especially when it snows frequently, leaving a three foot base of the white stuff. The world here gets very bright.
